Small-Batch Packaging Line: What to Buy First for Capping, Counting and Date Coding

A small-batch packaging line is usually built one step at a time, and the order you buy in decides how soon the line pays off. The practical rule is to buy first for the step that is slowest, most error-prone or most visible to your customer, and to confirm the container, cap and package details before you pick a model. This guide covers four common steps after filling: counting, capping and crimping, cap sealing, and date coding. It lists what each FMFPAX machine does and what to measure before you order.

In what order does a small packaging line run?

Most small-batch bottle and vial workflows follow the same sequence:

  1. Counting or filling the product into the container.
  2. Closing the container with a cap or crimp.
  3. Sealing or finishing the cap, for example heat-shrinking a neck capsule.
  4. Printing the date, batch or lot code.
  5. Labeling, bundling and outer packing.

You do not need to automate every step. Many operations run for years with a manual crimper and a hand coder, and then add a counter when volume grows. For help planning the whole line, see Packaging Solutions, and read How to Confirm a Packaging Machine Before Ordering from China before you pay.

What should I buy first?

If your product is Start with Why
Tablets, capsules or small solid parts going into bottles A counting machine Hand counting is slow and a common source of errors
Injectable, pharmacy or lab liquids in glass vials A vial crimper The crimp holds the stopper in place and must be consistent
Wine, olive oil, soy sauce or vinegar bottles with a PVC neck capsule A heat shrink cap sealer It replaces slow hot-water or heat-gun shrinking
Bags, boxes or any product that needs an expiry or batch code A date coding machine Codes support traceability and shelf-life tracking

How do I choose a vial crimper?

Choose by three measurements: the outside diameter of the vial mouth, whether the cap is pure aluminum or aluminum-plastic, and for 20 mm vials whether the neck is standard or coarse. Each crimping head fits one cap size and construction, so heads are not interchangeable between cap types.

Model Operation Cap sizes listed Best for
Manual Vial Crimper and Bottle Capper Handheld lever, no electrical supply 8, 11, 13, 15, 20, 26, 28, 30 and 32 mm Low volume, many cap sizes, pharmacy and lab use
QERS-SD Manual bench press, 130 mm travel 13, 15 and 20 mm heads Steadier crimping on the bench than a handheld tool
QERS-QD Pneumatic with foot pedal, 0.4 to 0.8 MPa air, 200 mm travel 13, 15 and 20 mm heads Repeated crimping with less hand effort, needs compressed air

For the QERS-SD and QERS-QD, the heads for 12.8-13.0 mm, 14.8-15.0 mm and 19.5-20.0 mm vial mouths come in two types: the "A" type for aluminum-plastic caps and the plain type for pure aluminum caps. Both machines have a spring base that reduces the pressure on the bottle and a limit nut for adjusting how tight the cap is crimped. Give the bottle body diameter and height as well if you need a custom base hole. See the capping and vial crimping machines collection for all models.

How do I choose a cap sealer for bottle necks?

The PVC heat shrink bottle cap sealer is for shrinking compatible PVC caps and capsules around the bottle neck. It has an 800 W heater with an automatic thermostat, a listed output of about 700 bottles per hour, a 500 x 120 x 150 mm body and a net weight of about 3 kg. It comes in 110 V and 220 V versions.

The operating steps are to place the PVC cap on the neck, set the temperature, push the bottle neck along the track to the heater opening, hold for about 2 to 3 seconds, and check that the shrink is even. Confirm that the cap size matches your neck diameter, and test a few bottles first if your cap material or bottle shape is different. See the sealing machines collection for other options.

How do I choose a counting machine?

Choose by the size and shape of what you count, the speed you need, and the way you fill. Two desktop models for tablets and capsules:

Model Speed Item size Other features
Automatic Capsule and Tablet Counting Machine Up to 500 pieces per minute Depends on tablet or capsule shape Single-dose, multi-dose and inventory modes, funnel drawers for direct bottling, 8.5 kg
RY-2S 500 to 1500 pieces per minute, depending on item size, shape and feeder setting 1 to 15 mm solid items, capsule sizes 000 to 5 Vibrating feeder, photoelectric sensing, two alternating outlets, color touchscreen, batch counts of 1 to 9999

Both listings tell you to confirm that your item's shape and size fit the machine. For RY-2S setup, see the RY-2S user manual. More models are in the counting machines collection and the capsule and tablet counting machines collection.

How do I choose a date coding machine?

Choose by the surface you print on, the format of the mark and the consumable you are willing to buy. There are three common methods in the FMFPAX range:

  • Manual hot stamp coding machine: hand-operated, uses thermal printing tape instead of ink, prints 1 to 3 rows with 14 characters per row, and works on soft materials up to 4 mm thick such as paper, PP film, PE film, laminated film, plastic bags and cardboard. It is not for hard materials.
  • HP-241G: thermal transfer ribbon coder for date and batch codes on packaging bags, in 110 V and 220 V versions, with 300 mm, 400 mm and 500 mm bracket options and 2x3 or 2x4 formats.
  • DS-1188: ink wheel printer for expiry dates, manufacturing dates, batch codes and lot numbers, sold with a 450 mm bracket or without a bracket. Measure the outer width of your current bracket if you are replacing a machine.

The HP-241C pneumatic ribbon coder is listed for bags, labels and boxes, and needs an air supply. See the whole date coding and batch printing collection.

What about bundling and strapping?

If your products are bundled before shipping, look at the strapping and banding collection. Tape and machine must match: check the tape width and roll length the machine accepts before buying consumables, because rolls are sold in different widths and lengths. For other steps, the packaging machine hub lists filling, sealing, coding and labeling machines together.

What should I confirm before ordering any packaging machine?

  1. Container: mouth or neck diameter, body diameter, height.
  2. Closure: cap material and construction, and the cap size.
  3. Product: size, shape and material of what is being counted, filled or coded.
  4. Output: how many pieces per hour you need.
  5. Power: voltage and plug type, and whether you have compressed air for pneumatic models.
  6. Consumables: ribbons, tapes, ink and replacement heads.
  7. Package contents and documentation, such as a manual.

Send these details to sales@fmfpack.com if you want a second opinion before ordering.

FAQ

What is the difference between a manual and a pneumatic vial crimper?

A manual crimper uses your hand or a lever to press the cap on, so it needs no power and is cheaper. A pneumatic crimper uses compressed air and a foot pedal, so each crimp takes less effort and is more consistent, but it needs an air supply of 0.4 to 0.8 MPa for the QERS-QD.

How do I know which crimping head I need?

Measure the outside diameter of the vial mouth, and identify whether the cap is pure aluminum or aluminum-plastic. For a 20 mm vial, also check whether the neck is standard or coarse. Then pick the head listed for that diameter and cap construction.

Can a heat shrink cap sealer handle any bottle?

No. It is for compatible PVC shrink caps and bottle neck capsules. Test a few bottles first if your cap material or bottle shape is different from the listed uses such as wine, olive oil, soy sauce and vinegar bottles.

Which date coder works on plastic bags?

The manual hot stamp coder lists plastic bags, PP film and PE film among its materials, and the HP-241G is listed for date and batch codes on packaging bags. The DS-1188 is an ink wheel printer for packaging code printing, so confirm that your package surface suits ink before ordering.

How fast is the automatic tablet and capsule counter?

The automatic capsule and tablet counting machine is listed at up to 500 pieces per minute depending on shape and conditions. The RY-2S is listed at 500 to 1500 pieces per minute depending on item size, shape and feeder setting.

Do these machines come in 110 V and 220 V?

Many do, including the PVC heat shrink cap sealer, the HP-241G, the RY-2S, the automatic capsule and tablet counter and the manual hot stamp coder. Select the voltage that matches your local supply when ordering.

Is there a manual for the machines?

The RY-2S has an online user manual, and the automatic capsule and tablet counting machine has an English operator's manual as a PDF on its product page. Check each product page for documentation before ordering.
