Purpose and Working Principle
The KU-3 measures the viscosity of paints and other coatings and shows the result of the test sample as a KU value, a cP value and a g value. The dispersing (agitating) disc rotates in the sample at a constant 200 r/min. The microcomputer converts the resistance acting on the disc into a KU value, so the operator reads KU, cP and g directly from the display. The instrument is designed in accordance with ASTM D562 and GB/T 9269.

Test Environment
- Place the instrument on a firm, level and smooth table, away from strong airflow, magnetic fields, electric pulses and electric fields.
- For operator safety, the power socket must be reliably grounded.
- Laboratory temperature: 23 °C ± 2 °C; relative humidity: ≤ 75%.
- Sample temperature: 23 °C ± 0.2 °C.
Operating Instructions
Step 1: Unpack the Instrument
Take the instrument out of the packing case and place it on the table.

Step 2: Install the Agitating Disc
Insert the agitating disc into the shaft sleeve according to the overall drawing and fix it with the screw.
Notice: the screw must bear against the flat face of the disc shaft.

Step 3: Power On and Self-Check
Insert the power plug and turn on the switch at the back of the machine. The system runs a self-check and then enters standby. The display shows the KU, cP and g values, all reading “0”.
Step 4: Fill the Vessel
Pour the test sample into the vessel. The liquid level should be 10 mm below the rim.
Step 5: Select the Unit and Lower the Disc
Place the vessel with the sample on the vessel seat and choose the measuring unit (“KU” for the KU value of the sample, “gm” for the load value). Press the lift handle down to immerse the agitating disc in the sample; the mark on the disc shaft should be level with the liquid surface. The machine starts operating automatically.

Step 6: Read the Viscosity
After a few seconds the display indicates the viscosity of the sample, and the KU, cP and g values can be read. The sample must be agitated for several seconds to reach dynamic balance so that accurate data is obtained.
Step 7: Raise the Handle
After measurement, lift the handle up to the limit stop at the highest position so that it is held there. The machine stops rotating and returns to standby. A built-in display program keeps the reading stable after each measurement for convenient reading. Repeat the process if you need a different measuring unit.
Step 8: Record Results with the Hold Switch
To record a result, press the external Hold switch down. The reading is held and different units can be selected for recording. Set the switch to off (upward) before measuring again.
Notices and Calibration
- The instrument contains precision measuring components; handle it with care during transportation.
- This is a specialized instrument. Disassembly of the casing by non-specialized personnel may affect its measurement accuracy.
- When the instrument is not in use, keep the lifting handle at the upper limit position rather than in the lower position; otherwise lifting may become stiff.
- Have the instrument inspected once a year by the supplier, or send it to a relevant metrology department for calibration.

KU-3 Krebs Viscometer FAQ
What does the KU-3 measure?
It measures the viscosity of paints and other coatings and displays the result as a KU value, a cP value and a g value.
What is the measuring range?
40.2–141.0 KU, 32–1099 g and 27–5250 cP, with ±1.5% FSR accuracy and repeatability.
Which standards is it designed to?
ASTM D562 and GB/T 9269.
How full should the vessel be?
Fill the approx. 500 ml vessel so the liquid level is 10 mm below the rim, then lower the disc until the mark on the disc shaft is level with the liquid surface.
Why should the sample be at 23 °C?
The manual specifies a sample temperature of 23 °C ± 0.2 °C and a laboratory temperature of 23 °C ± 2 °C for testing.
How do I keep a reading while switching units?
Press the external Hold switch down; the reading is held and you can select different units to record it. Set the switch back up (off) before the next measurement.
How often should it be calibrated?
The manual recommends inspection once a year by the supplier or calibration by a relevant metrology department.
